Description of the collection
The first, historically, of the Library's special collections, the library of August De Morgan (1806-1871), Professor of Mathematics at University College London, was purchased by Baron Overstone and given by him to the University in 1871. It contains c4500 books, pamphlets, manuscripts and autograph letters. The collection contains many rare or unique items and reflects De Morgan's interests as a bibliophile and mathematician including, for example, the first five printed Euclids, the first and other early editions of Newton's Principia, a number of early almanacs and works on mathematics, astronomy and actuarial science. There is also a major collection of De Morgan's own published works. Many of the books and pamphlets contain annotations by De Morgan.
